If you’ve been following my series on Wired.com, the latest installment includes an interview with my son. It also details a couple of improvements in his condition that are particularly encouraging. From Wired:
My son Caleb has a neurological condition called Sensory Processing Disorder. We have put him in a program that tries to reprogram his brain so that it will better coordinate sensory information.
I thought it was time you heard from Caleb himself, so I turned on a microphone and interviewed him. Today’s entry is the recording of that interview, his first-ever podcast.
And by the way he warmed up to it, I somehow think it won’t be his last.
Download the interview (mp3) [~14 minutes, 8MB]
Caleb and I talk about a lot of things in the recording, focusing on his thoughts about why we’re doing the Sensory Learning Program and what he thinks will come of it.

Keep up the good work! My son is going through a lot of the same stuff – we\’ve been doing Sensory Integration Training / Cognitive Perceptual Motorics, homegrown Auditory Integration Training and Omega 3 and 6 supplements since Fall. The most radical improvement is his large motor skills.
As for the debate that you encourage, I don\’t think that Temple Grandin would object so much to the therapy, as you think she might. She knows about sensory issues, as she designed the hugging machine for self-applying deep pressure. You could of course argue that this is solely a coping mechanism rather than a brain-rewiring mechanism.
Crucial to any brain rewiring is that the intervention is done with a willing participant. As long as your son knows why you are doing the stuff you are doing, and wants to do it, you should have no moral qualms about it. Particularly because the interventions you are describing don\’t really have any side effects besides possible disappointment if they don\’t work. We\’ve been very open with our son with the interventions that we considered a bit wacky (Auditory Integration Therapy, Wilbarger Protocol and Dietary Supplements) that they *might* help him, and that we were doing an experiment together to see if it worked. Don\’t underestimate the placebo effect.
In any case continued good luck with your family\’s brain programming project! Patience….
